Wardrobe Must Have- Dashiki

Exploring the Dashiki and how it can add a timeless flare to your wardrobe.

Not only is this staple, originating from West Africa, a huge symbol of African fashion and culture, but it's a beautiful addition to any wardrobe.
Dashikis, usually worn by men in West Africa, include shirts and tunics(pretty much longer shirts).
There are actually ones that are worn for specific occasions such as a wedding, where you'd wear grey dashikis and the groomsmen would wear white.

The colors that are used in the shirts also have their meanings, like blue represents peace, love, and harmony.
Purple and lavender represent the colors of African royalty.
So remember that when you're shopping for one!
What to wear it with?
As previously stated above, you have different dashikis for different events, meaning you just have to dress it up or down and it'll be an essential part of your out fit.

Jeans, whether distressed or not, are solid and neutral enough to let the shirt shine without making your fit cluttered. I'd stick to the blues to make the blue's in the shirt pop out. Throw on some white or black shoes to bring it all together, you want to stay neutral since there's so much color already, if you do go the other way though, make sure that you're complimenting colors in your shirt.

Crop pants are another bottom that can hold it's on against the dashiki. You guys know that I love my crop pants, with the extra room to show of your sneakers. You can't wear just anything with these colorful shirts, no basketball shorts you know?
Whether it be crop jeans or crop khaki's, paired with the West African shirt and completed with a low-top sneaker, you'll have an air of creative leisure around you.

Joggers or Drop Crotch( which is the real name) are another stylish pairing with the shirt. The baggy, but tight in the right areas, pants are a perfect companion to the light fabric that the dashiki is made of. You'll feel every breeze this summer and keep cool.
Though I would pair a longer dashiki, maybe one with a hood, with the joggers, and boom, you effortlessly, look dope.
Pair with low tops or mid to stand above the rest.
Made popular in the US during the Civil Rights Movement and the Black Power Movement, it has become a part of many Blacks in America's culture and style.
Whether you feel closer with your ancestors,
or you just love the patterns, color, and fit,
it's a solid and vibrant addition to anyone's wardrobe.
